How to Get Your First 10 Cleaning Clients

How to Get Your First 10 Cleaning Clients

Your first 10 cleaning clients usually come from people who already trust you, not from ads: friends, family, neighbors, realtors and property managers, then referrals from those first clients. Back that up with a Google Business Profile that has fresh reviews, and answer every call. Paid ads can work later, once you can track what each lead costs and whether it turns into a recurring client.

  • Start with warm outreach: people you know, and people who know homeowners.

  • Ask happy clients for a referral and a review right after a great clean.

  • Set up a Google Business Profile and keep reviews coming.

  • Answer the phone. A missed first call is often a lost first client.

  • Spend on ads only when you can track cost per booked job.

Why the first clients are the hardest

A new cleaning business has no reviews, no referrals and no track record, and it's asking a stranger to hand over the keys to their home. That is a trust problem before it is a marketing problem. It is also why cold channels feel dead at the start: an owner with an LLC, a website and a few ads can still hear "not interested" for months.

The way through is to start where trust already exists, then use those first clients to earn trust with everyone else.

Start with people who already trust you

Recommendations from people we know remain the most trusted form of advertising. In Nielsen's global survey of 30,000 people, 83% said they completely or somewhat trust recommendations from friends and family, more than any ad format. For a new cleaning business, that means your first list is people, not platforms:

  • Friends, family and neighbors, and the people they know.

  • Realtors, who need homes cleaned before listings and after sales.

  • Property managers and apartment leasing offices, who need move-out cleans every month.

  • Short-term rental hosts, who need a clean between every guest.

The last three are worth extra effort because they don't need one clean. They need one for every listing, every unit turnover or every guest. Your early advantage is time: drop by realtor offices, talk to leasing agents and offer a first clean so they can see your work.

Turn every good clean into the next client

Your first clients are your best marketing channel if you ask at the right moment. Ask right after a clean they loved, not weeks later, and make it easy:

  • Give them a short message they can copy and paste into a neighborhood group or a text to a friend.

  • Offer a small thank-you, such as a discount on their next clean, for every referral that books.

  • When one family member hires you, ask if anyone else in the family needs a cleaner.

Get found on Google, with fresh reviews

When someone does search for a cleaner, reviews decide who gets the call. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers, 97% read online reviews for local businesses, 74% look for reviews from the last three months, and 80% are more likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews.

That makes three habits worth starting on day one:

  • Set up a free Google Business Profile with your service area, hours and real photos.

  • Ask every happy client for a review, and keep them coming so they stay recent.

  • Reply to every review, good or bad, in your own words, not a template.

Answer every call

When you're a one- or two-person company, you're on jobs most of the day, and that is exactly when new customers call. Many won't leave a voicemail. They call the next company on the list. Early on, every missed call is a bigger share of your growth than it will ever be again. See what missed calls cost cleaning businesses for the math.

Paid ads: only when you can measure them

Ads can work, but they burn money fast when you can't tell which ones book jobs. Before spending, set up four numbers for every lead: where it came from, whether it booked, whether it became recurring, and what it cost. If you can't track those yet, the money is usually better spent on the channels above. For a look at where ad budgets leak, read why cleaning companies waste money on Yelp and Google ads.

Where Allclean fits

Early on, the leads you get are too valuable to lose. Kelly answers the calls nobody picks up, quotes your exact prices and books the job, and texts the customer a link to confirm and pay. Allclean's online booking page lets referrals book themselves at any hour, and built-in referrals help your first clients send you the next ones.
